Sewing Rebellion
Special Festivals
The Sewing Rebellion is a global initiative dedicated to distributing knowledge of the garment industry, pattern making, and sewing; encouraging the reuse, renovation, and recycling of existing garments and textiles in the creation of unique items tailored to individual tastes and body shapes. It was founded in 2006 by Frau Fiber (Carole Francis Lung). Steven Frost and I initiated the Colorado Chapter in 2016 at BLDG 61 as a monthly workshop dedicated to bringing community together to take action through mending, making, and sewing projects.
Mend the World was a collaborative mending experience developed by the Sewing Rebellion for an international festival in Berlin. Mending is an act of art, activism, storytelling, and empowerment. We shared hand mending traditions and skills and learned techniques from our neighbors around the world. At the Next Library Berlin international workshop participants made embroidered Call to Action patches to take back to their communities. They also contributed to the making of a collaborative banner. This banner is a ‘living document’ that we invite libraries and community spaces to host around the world and expand the project with added messages, mending techniques, and images. This partnership exhibits the power of the library as a welcoming platform for activism, connection, democracy, and free speech.
