Space Camp
Brief
BLDG 61, the Boulder Public Library Makerspace launched Space Camp in 2019, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. Local youth launched and retrieved high-altitude balloons which recorded flight data on electronics systems they designed and built. US educators also participated in these blended student-teacher workshops, taking from our experience lessons and projects that could be reconfigured for the traditional classroom and tied to Next Generation standards. Students engaged with: Arduino boards, various sensors, soldering and Python programming; building custom Yagi antenna; digital fabrication - laser cutting and CNC machining; 3D printing; vacuum forming; contacting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); HAM radio usage; public balloon launches; chemistry basics; extreme temperature mitigation for electronics; video editing; projection modeling; data visualization; public speaking; and more.
