Little Free Libraries
Brief
The Little Free Libraries workshop, hosted by BLDG 61 at the Boulder Public Library, engaged high school students from the I Have a Dream Foundation in a hands-on, community-driven project. Students were introduced to digital fabrication tools and workflows to design and build semi-modular units embedded with solar-powered electronics. They gained experience in soldering and programming the electronics using Arduino boards.
Part of the workshop included surveying the community to identify areas with limited access to the library via public transportation. Collaborating with neighborhood commissions, we selected optimal sites for the placement of these little free libraries.
Throughout the workshop, students developed a wide range of skills, including CNC machining, laser cutting, digital design with Adobe, vinyl cutting, concrete pouring, painting, and assembly. The library units were fabricated from recycled HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), combining sustainability, technology, and creative problem-solving.
