Accessibility Workshops

Brief

Developing inclusive workshops has been central to my practice of engaging with diverse communities. The first maker-in-resident at BLDG 61's Makerspace (part of the Boulder Public Library) was with Luanne Burke, a blind artist, who created workshops using laser-cut jewelry, ceramics, multimodal storyboards, and more.

Drawing inspiration from Ann Cunningham of the Colorado School of the Blind, Luanne and I developed a workflow that enabled the digitization of hand-drawn images into vector files compatible with laser cutting. This process allowed Luanne and other blind or low-vision (B/LV) community members to produce deep-etched designs on plywood and various materials that could be understood through touch, offering a multimodal experience. Additionally, we incorporated electronics and capacitive touch sensors to make these projects accessible to an even broader audience.

These experiences were foundational in my pursuit of "meaningful making"—leveraging digital fabrication tools to co-design solutions for challenges faced by community members through human-centered, collaborative design.
